CHAPTER 26
When the phone had rung with the dreaded summons back to Tehran, Major Siamak Azad of MOIS counterintelligence had assumed heâd be going on a one-way trip.
The Zionists had attacked the high-profile relief convoy in Beirutâs dahiyeh, right under Siamakâs nose. The Jews had hit the Laylaki missile assembly building, which represented a complete and utter failure of Siamakâs mission, he thought.
And it wasnât just the Jews. There was no denying that CIA had been involved too. The Lebanese intelligence service had had to rescue three of the wounded American operatives whoâd been down thereâ another sign of Siamakâs failure.
And, given the accuracy of the intelligence, Maloof had resumed his careful accusations that Kahlidi must surely be out there somewhere, feeding information to the Jews and Americans. A few of the higher-ups in IRGC had begun to believe him. Which meant that the compass arrow of blame was swinging ever closer to Siamak, for it was his job to find Kahlidi too.
Take it like a man, Siamak had thought when the watch officer from MOIS HQ had finally called.
That evening, with a knotted stomach, the MOIS major had arranged for a final quiet dinner with his wife and son in their tenth-floor Beirut apartment. The boy hadnât taken to the hand-carved Syrian soldiers. He still preferred his Star Wars LEGO. But Siamak let the boy play.
From the lofty perch of their apartment balcony, they enjoyed the Mediterranean sunset and knelt for the evening Maghrib prayer. Siamak held his familyâs hands as they knelt, clutching them in a way heâd never done before. And then the e-mail with the itinerary to Tehran had come to his secure in-box. As expected, it was a one-way ticket.
